An influential Chinese community leader in Hungary has purchased a 49% stake in a winery in the Eger wine region with a view to export the legendary red wine Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) to China.

Qu Lei, a Wenzhou native and a well known Chinese businessman in Hungary, has acquired 49% stake of Petreny Winery through his London-registered but Budapest-based venture capital Innovation Capital Global Ltd.

Apart from being a successful businessman, Mr Qu has also assumed an official role of trade ambassador for a Hungarian city. He was appointed Director and General Manager of the Trade Department of the southern Hungarian city of Szentes in October 2018 by Major Szirbik Imre.

Petreny Winery is the fourth largest winery in the Eger wine region with more than 300 years of history.

Mr Qu is planning to boost the winery’s reach by exporting to China. He was quoted by Hungarian Chinese community newspapers to have said the winery’s major markets are currently France, Italy and Poland, but he wanted to expand exports to China and beyond.

He said he wanted to bring Eger’s speaciality Egri Bikavér to the China market to allow Chinese consumers to taste the legendary Bull’s Blood wine.

Petreny Winery has vineyards covering an area of 158 hectares with annual production of 150,000 bottles. The winery also has two four-star vineyard hotels in the Eger region, one of which is surrounded by 50 hectares of vineyards and natural lakes.

Egri Bikavér is the most famous wine of the Eger wine region. It used to be a full-bodied wine made from the native Kekfrankos black variety.

The modern style of this wine is much lighter in body and tannins. Thirteen grapes are allowed in the modern style, including native varieties like Kekfrankos, Kadarka and Kékoportó as well as international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah.
