A smart Australian couple being quarantined in the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan managed to get their wine club to deliver two cases of wine by drone.

Dave Binskin and his wife Jan, from Palm Beach on the Australian Gold Coast, uploaded photos of their delivery on Facebook and received likes from wine lovers around the world.

The couple boarded the cruise ship in Hong Kong on 3 February Monday heading to Yokohama Japan.

Unfortunately, it was found out later that day that an 80-year-old man who disembarked from the cruise in Hong Kong on 25 January was diagnosed with the the new coronavirus, putting the health of all passengers and crew at risk.

Upon arrival in Yokohama on 6 February Wednesday, the Japanese authority ordered the cruise ship with 3,700 passengers and crew onboard to be quarantined offshore.

The Binskin couple and other passengers were confined to their cabin, with free internet and phone connections. Reports said staff, equipped with surgical masks and gloves, regularly enter their rooms to share supplies and food.

The Australian couple decided to get in touch with their wine club on Friday, they offered to deliver them some wine by drone.

Writing on Facebook Mr Binskin said: “On a lighter note in the middle of the Kaos yesterday we get a ring from our wine club I asked if they do free freight to Japan we have arranged for two cases to be delivered by drone.”

Mr Binskin soon shared photos of bottles of Pinot Noir in his cabin. He said the Japanese guard was confused when he spotted the drone but did nothing to stop the delivery.

He also uploaded another photo of himself on his bed enjoying his wine with the caption “happy hour drone wine, going troppo”.

Six days into the quarantine, a total of 136 cases have been confirmed onboard the Diamond Princess, more confirmed cases are expected.

The large number of patients means some will be treated locally in Yokohama hospitals while others will be sent to nearby prefectures.

The remaining passengers and crew will continue to be quarantined until 19th February. Princess Cruises, operator of the Diamond Princess, has committed to refund the passengers.
