A 48-year-old French citizen of Chinese origin who works in the French was confirmed to have contracted the new coronavirus and is now treated in Bordeaux, French health minister Agnès Buzyn has confirmed.

The patient had visited China including a stop in Wuhan, the centre of the epidemic, in a business trip. He returned to France last Wednesday and visited a clinic on Thursday with complaints of flu-like symptoms.

He was confirmed to have contracted the new virus on Friday, making him one of the first confirmed cases in the whole of Europe.

"He's been put in an isolated room so as to avoid any contact with the outside world. He's fine", the French health minister said.

French authorities also confirmed last Friday that a visiting Chinese national couple, aged 30 and 31, to have contracted the Wuhan virus

The couple arrived in Paris on 18th January and was said to have shown no symptoms at the time.

All three are being treated in isolation wards in hospital. The French citizen is being treated at the Pellegrin Hospital in Bordeaux, while the Chinese couple are being treated at the virology department of Paris's Bichat hospital.

The French authorities are currently working to track down people who have been in contact with the three patients.

These include passengers who shared the flight with the 48-year-old from Paris to Bordeaux as well as the people whom the Chinese couple had met in their first few days in Paris.

The French health minister said that France is the first European country to report confirmed cases simply because the country has developed a rapid testing system for the virus.

She added that she is expecting more cases in the coming days and is planning to hold daily briefings on the issue.
