Japanese drinks giant Suntory Holdings will release a limited edition of 55-year-old Yamazaki Single Malt this summer, the oldest expression the company has ever released. Interested buyers will have to enter a lottery to be held from 5-14 February in Japan.
Only 100 bottles of this expression will be released, each priced at ¥3 million (USD27,600).
The release is expected to attract a lot of interests, the release price is a big bargain when compared to the 2018 auction price of a 50-year-old Yamazaki at USD 343,000.
The lottery will only be held in Japan. Winners will be informed by end of February, the bottles will be shipped to Japanese addresses only.
Lucky winners will get their bottles by July, before the 2020 Summer Olympics opens in Tokyo.
The 55-year-old Yamazaki was aged in Mizunara oak and American white oak barrels, according to Shinji Fukuyo, Suntory’s chief blender.
He said whisky flavours don’t typically change much after 30 years, but the barrels were periodically moved to cooler locations so the maturing process slowed, giving the whisky a more nuanced character.
The whisky is reddish-amber in colour and will be sold in a Made-in-Japan crystal bottle, with the imprinted “55” lined in gold leaf.
The aroma is described as reminiscent of dry fruits like orange peel and tropical fruits like pineapple.
On the palette, that fragrance will expand as its light and gentle taste develops, along with the bittersweet flavour that comes with long aging.
