The French President Emmanuel Macron, who arrived in Beijing today to continue his state visit in China, has presented a bottle of 1978 vintage Romanée-Conti as special gift to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The year 1978 has special meaning in China, it was the year when China started its economic reform that changed the fate of the country.

According to the French government, the special gift was presented to President Xi yesterday when the two leaders met in Shanghai.

Romanée-Conti is a Grand Cru vineyard for red wine from Pinot Noir grapes in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy.

It is situated within the commune of Vosne-Romanée and is a monopole of only 1.8 hectares owned by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which takes its name after this vineyard.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, often abbreviated to DRC and owner of 25 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, is widely considered one of the world’s greatest wine producers.

All DRC wines, both white and red, are fine wines with substantial price tags. But the wines from the La Romanée-Conti monopole are the most expensive among them.

In October 2018, a bottle of 1945 Romanée-Conti was sold for a record price of USD558,000 at a Sotheby's auction in New York.

According to the popular wine searching website wine-searcher.com, the average price for the 1978 Romanée-Conti bottles currently available on the market is £19,109 (USD 14,813).

President Macron has repeatedly presented tasteful special gifts to the Chinese President. In January last year, during his first state visit to China, he presented a horse of the French Republic’s Cavalry Guard to President Xi.

In March of this year, during President Xi’s state visit to France, President Macron gifted him with the French edition of The Analects of Confucius translated by 17th century French philosopher François Bernier.
