LARGEST PRIVATE WHISKY COLLECTION TO GO PUBLIC MAY BE WORTH £8M

The largest private whisky collection ever to be offered for public sale will go under the hammer online in February and April next year and is expected to fetch £8 milliom (USD6.15m).

Dubbed the Perfect Collection by its online auctioneer, Whisky Auctioneer based in Perth Scotland, it contains 3,900 bottles and belonged to the late American drinks bottling entreprenuer Richard Gooding.

It includes a bottle of the Valerio Adami labelled Macallan 1926 60YO, as well as a bottle of the same 1926 60YO with the Macallan Fine and Rare label, a bottle of which was recently sold at hammer for £1.2m.

Seen as the holy grail of fine and rare whiskies, only 40 bottles of 1926 Macallan 60YO were ever released. Only twelve of them have Valerio Adami designed labels and one was said to have been lost in the 2011 earthquake in Japan.

Also included in the collection are fine and rare whiskies from Bowmore and Springbank, a well as a number of bottles from some of Scotland's lost distilleries, such as Stromness and Dallas Dhu, some of which have never before been seen.

Mr Gooding, who died in 2014, accumulated the whiskies over more than two decades. He regularly flew to Scotland to buy up special bottles, which he kept in his own “pub” – a room specially designed to showcase each whisky – in his Colorado home.

Collecting Scotch was one of Mr Gooding’s greatest passions, according to wife Nancy. “He loved every aspect of it; from researching the many single malt distilleries to visiting them and tasting their whiskies,” she said.

Iain McClune, Founder of Whisky Auctioneer said: “The Perfect Collection by Mr. Gooding is truly one of a kind and a testament to his dedication to collecting Scotch whisky. Its sheer scale and rarity makes it one of the most exciting discoveries in the whisky world, and we’re thrilled to unveil it to the public ahead of it going live on our online auction site next year.”

The Perfect Collection will go live on Whisky Auctioneer over two separate auctions from 7-17 February and 10-20 April 2020.

The Guinness World Records earlier confirmed that the world’s most valuable whisky collection is owned by Vietnamese whisky collector Viet Nguyen Dinh Tuan. The collection is valued at £10.77m but the owner has no intention of selling them.
