There are a total of 43 registered whisky producers in mainland China and the number is in steady increase, according to data from the China Alcoholic Drinks Association (CADA).
Speaking in the first edition of the China International Whisky Development Conference, leader of CADA’s whisky committee, Yuan Ye, said that among the 43, 24 are already in full production, one is in trial operation, 10 are under construction and 8 are still in planning stage.
Despite the fact that China’s spirits market is dominated by Chinese baijiu, the opportunity for whisky to gain ground in this huge market still managed to capture imagination from international and domestic producers alike.
International drinks giants like Pernod Ricard and Diageo have both embarked on their own whisky project in China.

Pernod Ricard’s whisky distillery in Eimeishan in southwerstern Sichuan province has already released its Chuan (叠川) single malt whisky.
Closer to Sichuan’s capital city Chenngdu, the local invested Laizhou (崃州) distillery has also released their own labels and has been receiving visitors on regular basis.
Sichuan is not the only place in China where whisky is being prduced, CADA has recently released a promotional video called "Chinese Terroir, Taste of the World" with a view to educate Chinese consumers.
The video not only features major Chinese whisky producing areas, it also introduces main producers and their brands as well as product characteristics, allowing consumers to have a better understanding of Chinese whiskies.
CADA has also organised a tasting event showcasing Chinese domestic whiskies ahead of the whisky development conference, brands like Chuan (叠川)、Laizhou (崃州)、Loom & Shuttle (钰之锦)、大芹、高朗、世界烧、吉斯波尔、淳之谷、云之所were available for tasting.
We shall see if these brands will one day help put China on the global whisky map.
