BOYZONE: TOO EXPENSIVE TO GET DRUNK IN HONG KONG

By David Ma

28-3-2019

The iconic Irish boy band Boyzone found Hong Kong’s booze too expensive and claimed that getting drunk in the city would cost a lot of money.

The group of four finished the Hong Kong leg of their “Thank you & Goodnight” global farewell tour on Tuesday on a high note at the Star Hall in KITEC.

It was 15 years ago, at the height of their career, that the group last played in Hong Kong. The last visit left a lot of good memories so they picked the city as one of the stops for their global farewell tour.

In the pre-show interview on Tuesday, the four told reporters that they had a late night on Monday taking in a lot of Hong Kong’s hospitality and were amazed by how much Hong Kong has changed.

They were surprised by how expensive Hong Kong has become. “It’s quite expensive though. It’s expensive to get drunk in Hong Kong,” said group member Keith Duffy.

The four had enjoyed a 10-course meal at their hotel before the show, they all liked the food but found the wines too pricey.

Made up of Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham, Shane Lynch, Ronan Keating and the late Stephen Gately, Boyzone is one of the world’s most successful boy bands having sold more than 25 million records.

The group had played stadiums and arena all over the world for this global tour, and will travel to Australia and New Zealand for the final leg of the farewell tour after Hong Kong.

Their comment on Hong Kong’s booze price is indicative of the city’s high living standard compared to other metropolitan cities.

Hong Kong was recently named the world’s most expensive city alongside Paris and Singapore by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a global economics think tank.

Despite adopting a zero tariff policy on imported wines, the price for a bottle of wine in Hong Kong remains high due to sky-high rents and high labour cost.
