This year’s Tax Free World Association (TFWA) Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference, a duty free and travel retail exhibition, has been cancelled, making it the latest trade event to have been disrupted by COVID-19.

TFWA’s decision came one day after Messe Dusseldorf, organiser of ProWein 2020, announced yesterday that the next show will be held 21-23 March 2021, meaning that this year’s show will be cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

TFWA said their Board and Management Committee decided to cancel the 2020 event due to be held in Singapore on 10-14 May, but they have committed that the event will return to Asia Pacific in 2021.

In a statement they said the decision was taken as a result of widespread concern, expressed by many exhibitors and delegates, with regard to the significant negative impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the global duty free & travel retail industry.

TFWA President Alain Maingreaud said: “This is not a decision that we wanted to take, nor is it one the Board and Management Committee has taken lightly. However, we feel that cancelling the event is the best and most responsible course of action, given the health crisis that has spread throughout the world, and the huge impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on our market.”

“We remain fully committed to our mission to provide the duty free & travel retail industry with a platform to prosper, and we will return to Asia Pacific in 2021 with renewed vigour and confidence in our industry’s resilience and capacity for re-invention,” he added.

Meawhile, Messe Dusseldorf first said that ProWein 2020, originally scheduled to be held 15 to 17 March in Dusseldorf, will be postponed to a later date. However, it announced yesterday that this year’s show will be cancelled due to the "very tight trade fair window" available to the wine industry.

Messe Dusseldorf Asia and Informa Markets, ProWine Asia’s co-organisers, has rescheduled the ProWine Asia Singapore show to 13-16 July to be held alongside FHA-HoReCa show in the same Singapore Expo venue.
