VINOS DE CHILE NEW PRESIDENT: CHINA IS MOST IMPORTANT STRATEGIC MARKET

Chile’s wine promotion body Vinos de Chile has elected Aurelio Montes Baseden as it’s new president. He told Chinese media that China is Chilean wines’ most important market and he will put special focus on China during his Asia visit in the second half of this year.
Elected by more than 70 associated companies in the annual assembly of Vinos de Chile held last week in Santiago, Mr Montes will lead the trade body until 2021.
The new president told China’s official Xinhua News Agency after the election that Vinos de Chile will continue to focus on developing the China market under his leadership.
“The Chinese market is very important to us, it is our most important strategic market,” said Mr Montes.
“The market in China is growing very fast. It’s like a light tower attracting a lot of our attention. The Chinese market is in the process of opening up, consumers there are starting to understand the charm of our wines,” he added.
China overtook USA to become Chilean wines’ biggest export market in 2017. Though China’s import wine market slowed substantially last year, wine imports from Chile remained stable with 0.01% increase in volume and 0.47% increase in value.
Mr Montes also told Xinhua that he will visit Asia in the second half of this year and China will be the focus of this trip.
The new president of Vinos de Chile is one of the most renowned personalities in the Chilean wine industry as founder and principal partner of Viña Montes in Colchagua.
He served as vice president of the National Society of Agriculture as well as Vinos de Chile between 2013 and 2015, focusing on foreign markets development.
