The average person of drinking age in South Korea consumes 13.7 shots of liquor per week, more than doubled that of Russia, according a study conducted by Euromonitor.

Of the 45 countries studied by Euromonitor, a London-based market research company, the Russians are the second heaviest drinkers at 6.3 shots per week.

Asian countries featured prominently on the top 5 spots of Euromonitor’s shot-taking list.

The Philippines is in third place with Filipinos downing 5.4 shots on average in a week. Thailand in fourth place, Thai drinkers down an average 4.5 shots a week. Japan in fifth place where 4.4 shots are consumed on average each week.

Chinese drinkers’ weekly average shots consumption is 1.5 at 27th place. While Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia are among the bottom 5, shots consumptions in these countries are negligible ranging from 0 to 0.3 shots.

Many South Koreans believe that getting drunk together is one of the quickest ways to build friendship and office camaraderie.

The working person’s drink of choice in South Korea is often “the bomb”, which is a shot of Soju (Korea’s traditional rice spirit) added to a glass of beer.

Though South Koreans down way more shots than Russians, when it comes to alcohol level, an average Russian drinker’s consumption is higher.

It is because Soju comes at about 20% alcohol, while Russian’s drink of choice Vodka has about 40% alcohol.
