Chinese President Xi Jinping visited a Ningxia winery yesterday as part of his 3-day trip to grasp the latest developments in the Muslim autonomous region in northwestern China.
The news of Xi’s visit to Yuanshi Winery in Ningxia was widely circulated among people in the Chinese wine trade, helping boost morale in the industry which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The official Xinhua News Agency reported Xi as saying during the winery visit that with improvements in people’s living standards, China’s wine-making industry has a bright future.
He said the industry should strengthen its marketing efforts and focus on brand-building to add value to its products.
He also highlighted the importance of technology improvement as well as environment protection.
Xi personally overlooks Chinese government’s policies to end poverty, the purpose his Ningxia trip is predominantly to do with poverty eradication.
The introduction of wine-making industry to Ningxia, having turned otherwise unproductive infertile land into vineyards, is firmly part of China’s plan to lift the far-flung region out of poverty.
To China’s domestic wine producers, Xi’s visit to a domestic winery is seen as a boost of morale.
Chinese domestic wine producers are struggling because of fierce competition from imported wines, high production costs and dented consumer confidence caused by the pandemic.
It is hoped that the publicity generated by Xi’s winery visit will help boost popularity of domestic wines in the local market.
