SINGAPORE HAS THE BEST BARS IN ASIA, ACCORDING TO ASIA’S BEST BARS AWARDS

The bar industry in Singapore is the biggest winner in the 2020 Asia’s 50 Best Bars Awards announced last week. The city’s Jigger & Pony climbed 33 places from last year to be crowned Asia’s Best Bar 2020.
Sponsored by French sparkling water brand Perrier, this year’s winning list was revealed via a virtual awards ceremony last Thursday.
Jigger & Pony is described as having a relaxed style of hospitality which is complemented by an excellent classic drinks list, as the bar goes about its business in a refreshingly old-school way.
The Old Man in Hong Kong came second. Inspired by Ernest Hemingway, this bar was last year’s No 1.
In third place is Coa. Also a Hong Kong pub, Coa offers the city’s largest mezcal and tequila collection featuring around 200 bottles.
In fourth place is Indulge Experimental Bistro in Taipei. The pub is said to has an international feel but the details are an ode to Taiwan’s produce and heritage, only viewed through the lens of modern mixology.
Singapore’s Atlas came fifth. This bar has a specialist gin collection, with more than 1,300 labels on offer. The premise itself was designed to mimic a grand hotel with a Great Gatsby-esque feel and is also home to some amazing art.
As a whole, Singapore is the top winner in this year’s awards. It has a total of 11 bars on the top 50 list. Hong Kong is second with 8 bars. While Tokyo, Taipei and Bangkok are joint third, each has 5 bars on the list.
India sees its first-ever entry this year, with craft cocktail bar Sidecar in New Delhi taking the 40th spot.
Now in its fifth edition, this year’s award features entries from 10 countries. The organiser hoped the publication of of this year’s winning list will instill optimism and positivity within the bar industry as the region gradually reopens.
