The world’s highest winery at 3911 meters in Zuogong County of Tibet Autonomous Region has started producing wines, according to Chinese media reports.

It is said the winery, named Tianlu Winery owned by C& G Hong Group based in southern Fujian Province, currently has a capacity to produce 3000 bottles of wines an hour.

Reports said that construction of Tianlu Winery was started April last year, the first phase has recently been completed.

The first phase covers an area of 20,000 sq meters with wine-making and bottling facilities, exhibition centre and science building.

When all construction is finished, the project will combine wine making with tourism and is expected to produce 9000 tonnes of wines a year.

It is understood that the winery uses grapes from vineyards planted by local farmers at an attitude of 2600 meters.

The claim that Tianlu is the world’s highest winery has not been verified by an independent organisation.

Tibet is also home the highest vine growing area in the world. The Caina Township of Lhasa City was awarded “Vineyard with the Highest Altitude” by Guinness World Record in 2018.

The Guinness World Record certified that vineyards in Caina are planted on an average altitude of 3,563.31 meters, beating the records set by Salta of Argentina by some 450 meters.
