FILIPINO BREWER SAN MIGUEL LAUNCHED OWN WINE BRAND

Philippines’ leading brewer San Miguel has entered the wine market. The company has recently released a dry white, dry red and a rosé wine and is planning to launch more labels closer to Christmas.

Bottled under the brand “Woomera”, the wines are produced in Australia not in the Philippines. The dry white is a Sauvignon Blanc, the dry red is a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend and the rosé is from a mixed of varieties.

San Miguel has been bottling wines in Australia before entering the market itself. Its packaging arm, San Miguel Yamamura Australasia, owns independent wine bottling facilities in Australia.

It decided to create its own brand earlier this year hoping to tap the Filipino wine market which consumes about 24 million liters a year.

The Woomera brand is distributed through a San Miguel subsidiary called Wine Brothers Philippines Corporation (WBPC), the company’s General Manager Jonathan Nisperos said: “The rationale is, the more wine we fill in our facility, the better for San Miguel.”

“The Australian wines that San Miguel brings in are actually quite good. Filipinos like fun. We drink beer, gin, and other liquors… the proposition here is really about enjoyment,” he added.

The three Woomera wines are already out in the Filipino market. The company is planning to release more varieties later during the Christmas season.

The Filipino wine market currently has a consumption of about 24 million liters a year, it is growing annually at 8% to 9%.
