CHINA’S NINGXIA TO GREET WORLD SOMMELIERS NEXT SEPTEMBER

The Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) has signed a two-year partnership with China’s Ningxia wine region. Under the partnership, Ningxia’s Yinchuan city will host next year’s 51st ASI General Assembly along with the creation of Ningxia’s Sommelier Association.
Scheduled to be held from 17 to 23 September 2020, the event will bring over 500 sommeliers, wine professionals and journalists from 63 countries to Ningxia, which is emerging to become a globally recognised wine region.
The new partnership also coincides with the creation of the Ningxia Sommelier Association, which will help improve the professionalism of sommeliers in the wine region.
“There is tremendous potential for growth in the sommelier profession in China, which has already progressed by leaps and bounds in recent years, and we look forward to working even more actively in fostering sommeliers in the region through this new partnership,” said ASI president Andrés Rosberg.
“We are impressed with the significant support that the government of Ningxia are offering us in preparation for the 2020 annual gathering of ASI, which will provide ASI member association presidents and many other sommeliers from around the world a remarkable opportunity to discover the evolution of wine in China.”
“We are also pleased that Ningxia is looking at a long-term partnership that they are hoping to extend beyond the 2020 General Assembly,” Rosberg added.
At this year’s ASI General Assembly held in Reims in French Champagne wine region, Dominican Repulic was elevated to become a full member, while Kazakhstan and Paraguay were awarded status as observer members.
Established in France in 1969, the ASI currently has 55 full member associations, 4 observer associations and 6 applicant associations.
