INAUGURAL VINEXPO SHANGHAI OPENS TODAY

The inaugural Vinexpo Shanghai opens today providing international producers and Chinese buyers a platform to finalize Chinese New Year orders.

Over 5,000 qualified Chinese and international trade professionals are expected to turn up during the 3-day show period, according to the organiser.

This new biannual Vinexpo show in Shanghai will alternate with the biannual Hong Kong show, helping the Vinexpo trade show group to strengthen its presence in the Greater China market.

Among all major wine producing countries, France has one of the most prominent presences in this inaugural Shanghai show.

Having lost their status as biggest wine exporter to China early this year to Australia, French producers seemed to have geared up in order to catch up.

Co-ordinated by French government trade body Business France, the French pavilion spanned over 300 sq meters of exhibition area with more than 30 exhibitors showcasing still wines, sparklings and spirits.

Among them are Maison Chapoutier, CVBG Grands Crus, Borie-Manoux, Sovex Grands Châteaux, Nathaniel Johnston and Twins, as well as Champagne houses Maisons Charles and Piper Heidsieck.

Outside of France, Chilean companies such as Concha Y Toro, Emiliana and Sur Valles Wine Group are present, as well as Spanish conglomerates González Byass and Osborne.

Meanwhile, China’s Greatwall Wine, Yantai Changyu Pioneer Wine and Tonghua Wine Co will also showcase their latest products along with baijiu producers like Fenjiu Group and Chengdu Xiangbeijinqiu.

The show opened at a time when China’s economy is slowing down amid a trade war with USA, 35% of China’s wine importers were said to have closed down since start of this year.

The organiser Vinexpo, however, remained optimistic and predicted that China’s wine imports will continue to rise and is set to reach 89.7 million 9-litre cases in 2021, representing an increase of 23.7% in three years.

The French trade show group has predicted that China will be the world’s largest importer of wines and spirits by 2022.
