Online drinking parties are very popular in Japan with 61% of women in their twenties said they had toasted virtually with friends since the outbreak of COVID-19, according to a survey conducted by a Japanese pharmaceutical company.
Toasting with friends online is more popular among young people, but overall 26.4% of respondents said they had taken part in online drinking parties through Zoom and its likes.
Respondents said online drinking parties allowed them to drink with friends and acquaintances living far away and that they do not have to worry about the time.
The disadvantage most quoted by respondents was that online drinking sessions can drag on for hours, leading some people to drink more than they should.
Conducted by Itō Kanpō Pharmaceutical in August this year, the survey has interviewed 1,000 respondents between the age of 20 to 60 who drink at least once a week.
The survey found no substantial change in the frequency of alcohol consumption among respondents.
Named “Survey on Drinking and Health During Coronavirus”, the results also found that about 30% respondents had been drinking more at home since the outbreak of the pandemic, while some 70% said they had been drinking less outside of home in pubs and bars.
When asked why they decided to drink at home more, the most common reason quoted was to avoid the coronavirus, followed by the comfort of home, drinks are cheaper and lack of hassle.
Some respondents said their relationship with their spouse and children had improved since the pandemic because they spent more time talking about all sorts of things and often “over a drink”.
