JAPAN IMPORTED 20% MORE SPARKLING WINES FROM EU IN 2019, CAVA STOLE THE SHOW

The free trade agreement between Japan and European Union (EU) has led to a 20% increase in Japanese import of sparkling wines from the EU in 2019, Japanese news media nippon.com reported.
Quoting data from the Customs and Tariff Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Finance, nippon.com reported that France, Spain and Italy are the top three sources of Japan’s sparkling wine imports in 2019, followed by Chile and Australia.
Among them, sparkling wines from Spain have seen the fastest growth reaching 127,000 hectolitres (hl) in 2019, almost tripling the 46,000 hl imported in 2009.
The Cava category from Spain’s Catalonia is very popular among Japanese consumers and is now regularly consumed in households.
Cava is of much lower price point than French Champagne but is made by the same traditional method and pairs equally well with Japanese fish dishes.
Despite the increasing popularity of Cava, France remained the biggest source of sparkling wine imports to Japan in 2019 at 185,000 hl, but import volume grew much slower than Spanish sparkling wines.
Italy was in third place, exporting 61,250 hl of sparkling wines to Japan in 2019.
Sparkling wine imports in Japan decreased substantially after the financial crisis in 2008, the trade has recovered in recent years with consumption almost doubled compared to 2010.
Since the EU-Japan free trade agreement became effective in February 2019, Japan’s sparkling wine imports picked up even more momentum with the zero tariff now enjoyed my European wines.
