Vine growers in Kawauchi village in Japan’s nuclear hit Fukushima Prefecture completed the first harvest of wine grapes planted as part of the efforts to help the village regenerate from the 2011 nuclear accident.

About 30 growers and volunteers joined the harvest yesterday where they picked Chardonnay grapes on a four-hectare vineyard in the village.

Vine growers started planting grapevines four years ago after the nuclear evacuation order was lifted in Kawauchi village.

More than 10,000 grapevines were planted. The growers initially planned to start harvesting and producing wine last year, but production was postponed due to a poor harvest as a result of bad weather.

Kawauchi Mayor Endo Yuko told Japan’s national broadcaster NHK that he is confident that wine production will become a new business that helps the village recover. He is hoping that wine will become a new local specialty.

About 500 kilograms of grapes were harvested yesterday. They will be processed and fermented in a winery in Yamanashi Prefecture near Tokyo. The first ever vintage of Kawauchi wine is expected to be available next year.

The meltdown of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant’s reactors in 2011 is one of the most serious nuclear accidents in human history.

The Japanese government ordered evacuation of all residents living within 20 kilometres of the plant, a total of 164,000 people were once evacuated.

Kawauchi village sits at the periphery of the evacuation zone, its residents were among the first affected by the accident to be able to return to their homes.
