MALAYSIA’S WINE IMPORTS SURGED 38% IN H1 2021

Malaysia’s wine imports increased by 38 percent in first half of 2021 compared to the same period last year, according to data from the country’s External Trade Statistics.
Total wine imports in the period reached 150 million ringgit (USD35.5 million) amid gradual reopening of global economies.
Despite the full lockdown imposed across the country in June alone, Malaysia’s wine imports soared nearly 300 percent 33.7 million ringgit (USD8 million) year-on-year.
France remained Malaysia’s top source of wine imports, rising by 90 percent year on year to 55.5 million ringgit by value.
Australia came in second, wine imports increased by 8 percent to 45.9 million ringgit.
Italy was third, wine import value jumped by 92 percent to 12.2 million ringgit.
Spain did particularly well in the period, its wine exports to Malaysia doubled in first half of 2021 to 5 million ringgit. It’s now Malaysia’s fifth biggest source of wines.
In fourth place is Chile, wine exporters there did not perform during in this period in the Malaysian market, having lost 20 percent of export value to 8.8 million ringgit in the first half.
