The government of the Indian state Uttar Pradesh has made it mandatory to have a licence if an individual or a household wants to keep more than 6 litres of liquor at home.
The new policy in Uttar Pradesh states that: “Under the new excise policy of the state, for personal use, individuals will have to obtain a license to purchase, transport or keep in private possession liquor in excess of the prescribed retail limit.”
According to the new policy, the prescribe limit is set at 6 litres. Individuals and households who want to purchase, transport, or keep in private possession of more than 6 litres of alcohol have to obtain a licence from the Excise Department.
The Excise Department will provide the licence at an annual fee of Rs12,000 (USD164) while Rs51,000 will have to be deposited as security money under the stipulated conditions.
The new policy aims at raising income to the state government. “The state government has set a revenue target of Rs6,000 crores (USD810mn) in the year 2021-22, against Rs28,300 crore in the year 2020-21 of the Excise Department. As a result, 7.5 percent increase in annual licence fees for country liquor, foreign liquor retail shops, and model shops for the year 2021-22. There has been no increase in the retail shop license fees of beer," additional chief secretary of excise department Sanjay R. Bhoosreddy told local media.
“To promote liquor production in the state under the new policy, the liquor produced in the state from the fruits produced in the state will be exempted from consideration duty for the next five years,” he added.
