WSET GRANTED OVERSEAS NGO STATUS NEEDED TO RESUME OPERATIONS IN CHINA

The London-based Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) has been granted an overseas non-governmental organizations (NGOs) status in China, the organisation announced in this official social media page in China.
An overseas NGO status will allow WSET to resume its operations in China which had been temporarily suspended due to "administrative issues" since February this year.
Though this is by far the most solid news WSET has made about its Chinese operations since February, the organisation still has not indicated on exactly when their operations in China can resume.
Recent Chinese media reports said WSET had been in contact with its approved program providers (APPs) in China on the prospects of a full resumption of operations.
It was said that WSET indicated in a communication in July that they "have moved closer to resuming operations in Mainland China" and are currently in the process of establishing a Chinese representative office.
Chinese media reports also said this latest communication was the third so far. Two earlier communications were said to be about the preparation of the necessary documents and submission of the documents to relevant authorities for NGO status application.
The Wine Chronicle has contacted WSET for comments but have not received any response before publication of this story.
WSET's application for NGO status serves to confirm our report that its operations in China had failed to comply with China's non-governmental organisation (NGO) laws and was not purely due to "administrative issues" .
The laws require multi-department approvals for international education organisation to introduce their courses to China. These departments include education, cultural and civil services, as well as the local government authorities in where the WSET program providers are based.
China is among WSET's top markets , some 100,000 students have participated in WSET exams in 2019/20 academic year through the 170 approved program providers set up throughout China.
