The organiser of Vinexpo Shanghai has cancelled the 2021 show with short notice citing pandemic restrictions in China as the reason.

The exhibition’s French organiser, Vinexposium, said in a release dated 14 September on its website that “Vinepxo Shanghai, scheduled from 20 to 22 October, will not be running due to health restrictions in China which do not allow Vinexposium to guarantee a high-performance return on investment for its clients.”

The message was buried in an account of event updates and the company gave no further details on cancellation arrangements.

And then yesterday, the organiser announced through its official Chinese WeChat account that Vinexpo Shanghai 2021 is cancelled.

In the announcement, it cited the pandemic and the challenges on international travels and effective communications as the reason for the cancellation.

“As a result of the pandemic, international travels and business communications are greatly restricted, making it impossible for us to present a high quality event to the trade,” the organiser said in the announcement on its WeChat account.

Managed by local operator Comexposium China, the 3-day exhibition was supposed to be held at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center.

The Drinks China event, which was scheduled to be held concurrently with Vinexpo Shanghai, has also cancelled, causing a lot of confusions to exhibitors and visitors alike.

Back in May, Vinexposium CEO, Rodolphe Lameyse, was still very confident that Vinexpo Shanghai will be able to go ahead.

“We are delighted that the return of Vinexpo Shanghai in a physical format will enable us to once again bring together wine and spirits players at an event that will focus on tastings and the engagement with others that we have all sorely missed,”  Lameyse said in a statement in May.

Vinexpo Shanghai was first launched in 2019, the debut show was the only face-to-face event the organiser managed to pull out.

Last year, Vinexpo Shanghai 2020 went online because of the pandemic, while its competitors ProWine Shanghai and Wine to Asia still went ahead despite repeated delays.
