AUSTRIAN WINE EXPORTS UP 25% IN H1 2021, TO CHINA UP 247%, TO JAPAN UP 52%

Austrian wine exports were up 25 percent by value in the first half of 2021, exports to the Asian markets saw strong growth, to China up 247 percent and to Japan up 52 percent.
The value of Austrian wine exports rose to over €111 million (USD127 million) during this period, by volume it also rose by 9.8 percent to 36.9 million litres.
“We had hoped that the relaxation of global COVID-19 restrictions would be beneficial for our exports, but the current figures far exceed our expectations,” said Chris Yorke, CEO of industry marketing board Austrian Wine.
“While the hospitality industry is, sadly, only recovering slowly in the domestic market, the reopening of the hospitality industry internationally has meant that our winemakers have also been able to improve sales of their high-quality wines – as shown by the large increase in the export value. As a result, the average price per litre has once again topped 3 euros and is currently at a very pleasing €3.02.”
Having achieved over €111 million for the first half of the year, Austrian wine producers are now looking to achieving its medium term objective of an annual export value at €200 million.
Apart from Japan and China, both are of small base, exports to all Austrian wines’ top markets saw significant growth during this period.
Exports to top market Germany increased 15 percent, to Switzerland up 21 percent, to USA up 33 percent, and to Canada up 111 percent.
The Scandinavian countries, which had already experienced a significant increase in 2020, rose by a further 14 percent, while Belgium and the Netherlands added a combined increase of 37 percent.
Despite that the UK has left the European Union, Austrian wine exports to the country grew 52 percent during this period.
