Bordeaux wines dominated fine wine trading in Asia in the first half of this year, according to the London-based fine wines trading platform Liv-ex.

Wines from Bordeaux were the most searched-for labels on the platform, they also dominated the chart of top traded wines by value during this period.

Nine of the 10 most searched for wines were either Lafite or Mouton Rothschild, especially the latter which had seven listings overall in the top of the charts.

The wines being searched were predominantly vintages from the late 1990s and pre-2010; both “on” and “off” vintages in their drinking windows according to Liv-ex.

Looking at trade by value in Asia in the first half of this year, this preference for Bordeaux remains clear though topping this chart was the 2006 vintage of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from Burgundy.

Three vintages of Lafite Rothschild – 2008, 2016 and 2018 – as well as 2008 Mouton Rothschild occupied second to fifth places on this trade by value chart, while 2017 vintage of US label Opus One came in at sixth place.

Yet looking at wines traded by volume, the picture is very different and indicative of the general trend towards an ever broader, more diverse secondary market in Asia.

Topping this chart was 2016 Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino from Tuscany Italy.

In second and third places were 2017 vintages of Brane-Cantenac and Smith Haut Lafitte, both are Bordeaux wines.

The 2017 vintage of Produttori del Barbaresco from Piedmont Italy was fourth, followed by a non-vintage Delamotte Champagne and 2008 vintage of R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva from Rioja of Spain.
