Wines of Chile will debut Taste of Chilean Terroir roadshow in Jakarta of Indonesia on 28th of October.

Organised by Wine of Chile and the Trade Commission of Chile in Indonesia, the debut event will be held in the Westin Hotel and will feature wines from 16 Chilean wineries.

The event will start with a seminar conducted by Wicien Widjaja, President of the Jakarta Chapter of Indonesian Sommelier Association, followed by tastings of the featured wines from participating producers.

As a Muslim country, Indonesia is a not a major market for wine and spirits despite being the 4th most populous country with a population of 270 million.

Worse still, the Indonesian House of Representatives has included the controversial Alcohol Prohibition Bill among a list of prioritized legislative initiatives for this year.

Based on the draft released by the House, the bill seeks to criminalise producers, distributors, sellers, buyers and consumers of alcoholic beverages.

People caught consuming alcohol will be subject to a maximum of two years in prison and a fine of Rp50million (USD3,500), more than 4 times Indonesian average monthly salary.

Wine of Chiles and the Trade Commission of Chile in Indonesia went ahead to debut the Taste of Chilean Terroir roadshow next month is indication that they are confident about Indonesia’s wine market despite the possibility of a alcohol prohibition law in the country.
