After being shut for more than two years, Singapore’s nightlife venues can eventually open their doors again from today, but customers will need a negative antigen test and have mask on even when dancing and singing.

Singapore government announced early this month that all nightlife establishments including karaoke, nightclubs and discos would be allow to reopen from 19 April with safety management measures.

For nightlife establishments such as nightclubs and discos where there is dancing, a negative rapid antigen test supervised by a Ministry of Health-approved test provider - either in person or remotely - will be required for patrons before entry.

The test will be valid for 24 hours from the time of the test result.

Individuals are also required to wear their masks in indoor settings if there is singing, dancing or both.

They may remove their mask if they are eating or drinking, but should put their mask back on immediately after doing so.

Nightlife establishments that can cater to more than 1,000 people will have a 75 percent capacity limit. The limit does not apply to establishments with lower capacities.

"The tests will cost more for customers, and we're concerned people do not know it needs to be supervised and valid till we close at 6am, and they'll be unhappy if we turn them away," Mages Vari, director of Club Rumours told The Straits Times.

"We also need to be stringent with our checks within the club and ensure people keep their masks up or we could risk being forced to shut down for flouting the safety measures," she added.

Despite the safe management measures in place, most venue owners are glad that they can finally reopen after two years of the pandemic.

Many clubs have closed in the past two years, some survived by turning into a food venue serving alcohol with DJ performances or even allow customers to dance at their tables.

The Singapore government has allowed restaurants, bars and pubs which serve food to stay open for business when situation allowed in the past two years.

Some nightclub operators said customers have got used to the food and entertainment setting since the pandemic, they will not likely to come back in droves that nightlife venues are allowed to reopen.

Mages of Club Rumours estimated that they will see about 40 percent of their usual crowds on Wednesday with ladies’ night, and a full house on Friday and Saturday night at the club whose capacity is less than 1,000 people.
