Global alcoholic drinks giant Diageo announced that it will invest INR450 million (USD5.66m) to build a craft and innovation hub in Goa state on the western coast of India.

To be located in the city of Ponda, the hub will spread over four acres, to be equipped with facilities for distillation, maturation and blending of spirit products like whisky, gin and rum.

It will also be installed with an automated bottling and packaging line for craft spirits and a modern warehouse for incoming and finished products. Production capacity will be 20,000 cases of spirits a month.

The hub will serve as an incubator for select start-ups, providing them with infrastructure to make their craft products. There will also be a consumer experience centre.

Diageo said the facility will employ 250 local staff when fully operational. In line with the company’s commitment to its 2030 sustainability goals, the hub will use 100 percent renewable energy for distillation and be 40 percent powered by in-house renewable electricity generated by its own solar plant and steam turbine.

“Goa is a hotbed for craft, demand for which is growing rapidly both in India and globally, among consumers who are keen to further discover and enjoy fine spirits,” said Hina Nagarajin, CEO of Diageo India.

“We are excited about the innovative possibilities this facility could bring not just for us, but the entire ecosystem as well,” she added.

The company has also launched an skill training program to train 1,000 local young people in association with the state government of Goa.

Over a three-year period, the programme will provide young people with more than 300 hours of skills training to help them find jobs in the hospitality, tourism and related industries.
