STRONG RECOVERY IN EXPORTS OF SCOTCH WHISKIES IN 2021 DRIVEN BY ASIA AND LATIN AMERICA

Exports of Scotch whiskies were up 19 percent in value to £4.51billion (USD6.1b) last year, driven by an impressive upsurge in Latin America, where shipments by value were up 70.7 percent, and strong growth in Asia Pacific with exports to China up 84.19 percent and to India up 42.9 percent.

Quoting figures from UK’s tax office HMRC, the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) said that despite strong recovery in 2021, total export value was still 8 percent below the £4.91b recorded in 2019.

However, export volumes rose 21 percent to 1.38b bottles (70cl) in 2021, up 238m bottles from 2020 and 73m bottles above the volume recorded in 2019.

The SWA attributed the recovery to a strong performance in emerging economies, with shipments by value to China up 84.9 percent to £198m, making it Scotch whiskies’ fifth biggest market by value.

Meanwhile, exports to Taiwan were up 24.3 percent to £226m, making it the third most valuable market after USA and France.

India overtook the USA in 2021 to become Scotch whiskies’ second largest export market by volume after France with a volume growth of 44.3 percent.

By value, the trade grew by 42.9 percent, making India Scotch whiskies’ eight most valuable market.

"The global footprint of the industry in 2021 is a clear sign that the Scotch Whisky industry is on the road to recovery,” said SWA Chief Executive Mark Kent.

Scotch exports fell to a 10-year low in 2020 thanks to the pandemic and the punitive import tariffs of 25 percent imposed by the Trump administration of USA.

“Value and volume are both up as consumers return to bars and restaurants, people return to travel and tourism, and we all return to a degree of normality after a period of enormous uncertainty for consumers and business,” added Kent.
