Beam Suntory China has been fined RMB 160,000 (USD25,300) by Shanghai authorities for violated Chinese advertising laws.
The punishment is related to a promotional video with a scene showing alcohol consumption on the company’s social media account.
Beam Suntory China was accused by Shanghai authorities for breaching advertising laws, as the laws do not allow advertisements to showcase acts of drinking alcohol.
Chinese advertising laws require advertisers to refrain from promoting drinking, they are not allowed to show the act of drinking or depict activities such as operating cars, boats or aircrafts while promoting an alcohol brand. They are also banned from implying that alcohol relieves stress or anxiety.
Violation of the laws can lead to penalties for up to RMB 1 million (USD156,250).
This is not the first time Shanghai authorities fined foreign wine and spirits companies for violating advertising laws.
Budweiser China was punished three times last year and received penalties of a total of RMB 1.05m.
Pernod Ricard China was fined RMB 160,000 in last year and RMB 300,000 the year before.
