The Macallan Distillery launched an 81 years old (YO) single malt whisky today at a recommended sales price of £92,000 (USD125,000) with a limited release of just 288 bottles worldwide.

Named The Reach, the spirit in the blend has been maturing since 1940 at the time of the Second World War, making it the oldest single malt whisky ever released by The Macallan.

The Reach has been aged in a single sherry-seasoned oak cask and is presented in a crystal decanter on a bronze sculpture of three hands.

Each hand represents a character in Macallan’s history – one symbolising the distillery workers of 1940 when the country was at war, another of one-time chairman Allan Shiach whose grandfather was in charge when the spirit was consigned to its cask and the third of today’s master whisky maker Kirsteen Campbell, who selected the 1940 cask.

“The creation of many hands, The Reach has been a truly collaborative effort. It’s also a tribute to the people who made this precious whisky, and their enduring spirit which never wavered,” said Campbell.

“Created during a turbulent time in the world, this extraordinary expression showcases The Macallan’s history, ingenuity and unmistakable strength of character,” added Campbell.

“Its deep auburn hue is the first hint of this remarkable whisky’s astonishing depth. Offering notes of dark chocolate, sweet cinnamon and aromatic peat, leading on to treacle toffee, crystalised ginger and charred pineapple, before giving way to an intensely rich, sweet and smoky finish,” she commented.

The Reach is arguably the oldest single malt whisky ever launched by any distillery. The last oldest single malt being launched was the Generations Glenlivet 80YO released in September last year by Gordon & MacPhail’s.

The Reach will be on display in The Macallan Estate Boutique in Scotland from today and later in The Macallan domestic and travel retail Boutiques.

The release is limited to 288 decanters, recommended sales price is £92,000, USD125,000 or €110,000.

Since rare bottles of Macallan whiskies are among the most sought-after collectables, prices can inflate quickly disregard of their initial price.

Whisky maker’s notes of The Reach:
• Colour: Deep auburn
• ABV: 41.6%
• Nose: Dark chocolate, sweet cinnamon, aromatic peat, plums, leather, pink grapefruit, redcurrant jelly and a rich resinous note.
• Palate: Treacle toffee, bramble jam, liquorice, crystalised ginger, nutmeg, charred pineapple, pecans, woodsmoke.
• Finish: Intensely rich, sweet and smoky.
