Japan's alcoholic drinks exports increased 61.4 percent in 2021 to surpass 100 billion yen for the first time at 114.6 billion (USD840 million), according to trade statistics published by the Ministry of Finance.
The trade has seen uninterrupted growth for ten years, benefiting from the increasing popularity of Japanese food and drinks worldwide.
Before the export boom, Japan exported only 20.6 billion yen of alcoholic beverages in 2021. This represents a five-fold increase in the space of ten years.
Japanese sake and whisky are the most exported categories, accounting for over 70 percent of the total, followed by gin, vodka and wine.
The top importer of Japanese alcoholic beverages is China, followed by the United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan and France.
The exports of Japanese sake mainly concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region, the Japanese government is working to develop other markets including countries in the European Union.
