A survey conducted recently in Japan found that 42 percent of young people in the country have never consumed sake before, despite that the drink has gained substantial popularity globally in recent years, Japan Agricultural News reported.

Quoting a survey conducted by the 180-year old Tatenokawa sake brewery in Yamagata Prefecture, the news media said the results are quite alarming and warned that sake's popularity in domestic Japan may be unsustainable.

The survey asked 10,000 men and women ranging in age between their 20s and 60s how often they drank sake.

Out of the respondents in their 20s and 30s, 42 percent said they have never drunk sake before, 28 percent said they had not drunk sake for over a year, that means 70 percent of young people surveyed had not consumed any sake in over a year.

The survey also revealed a gender discrepancy, with 74 percent of all women surveyed having not drunk any sake for over a year.

Women also tended to prefer drinking sake with family or friends, while more male respondents said they drank sake alone.

With the coronavirus making it difficult for people to have big drinking parties, the Tatenokawa brewery is concerned that this may result in less women drinking sake in the future.

More commonly known in Japan as nihonshu, sake is the iconic Japanese beverage made from fermented rice.

Japan Agricultural News quoted some Japanese consumers as commenting that young people do not drink sake because it is too expensive compared to other alcoholic drinks.

Some said they cannot afford good quality sakes and the cheaper products always give them bad hangovers.

Others said they have given up drinking alcohol altogether including sakes.
