Pubs, bars and other nightlife venues will be allowed to reopen in 31 provinces in Thailand from tomorrow, as the country’s COVID-19 cases began to level off.
From tomorrow, entertainment venues in touristy areas like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and 27 other Blue and Green zone provinces will be permitted to stay open until midnight.
However, entertainment venues in 46 provinces under the Yellow zone of highest surveillance will stay have to stay closed.
Also from tomorrow, all border checkpoints will re-open and returning Thai citizens will not have to register through the Thailand Pass system, which requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative PCR test within 72 hours of departure.
However, registration is still required for foreign visitors and so is the requirement for COVID-19 insurance coverage of USD10,000.
The reopening offers hope to Thailand’s hospitality and tourism sectors, which have been devastated by the extended shutdown.
Authorities said that if the reopening does not cause a spike in the infection rate, more restrictions will be eased to boost the economy.
Thailand’s Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration announced last week that entertainment venues, pubs, bars, karaokes and massage parlors in Green and Blue zoes will be allowed to reopen on 1 June as COVID cases level off in the country.
Businesses planning to re-open must formally request permission from local authorities and strictly adhere to disease control guidelines, which include prohibition on sharing drinking glasses, a vaccine mandate of at least three doses for both customers and employees, and weekly antigen tests.
