South Korea’s biggest travel retailer, Lotte Duty Free, opens its first store in Australia in downtown Sydney today showcasing high-end brands including hundreds of wine and spirit labels.

Shoppers will be greeted by a concierge and discover a differentiated experience on each floor. The upstairs wines and spirits zone will feature a cellar-door experience where wine connoisseurs can connect with Lotte Duty Free’s resident sommelier and enjoy wines or sample premium whiskies from a 100-bottle Whisky Bar.

The focus for wine and spirits will be on Australians and New Zealanders, offer will reflect the high regional duty free allowances (up to one bottle of 2.25 litres in Australia and up to three bottles of 1.125 litres in New Zealand).

Covering more than 2970 square meters, this three-storey shop in the heart of Sydney’s commercial centre marks the restart of Lotte’s global expansion after two years of suspension due to the COVID pandemic.

“The opening of the Sydney store reflects our will to speed up expansion once again,” said Lotte Duty Free CEO Lee Kap.

The Sydney shop is Lotte Duty Free’s first new store in two years, following the launch of the 3000 square meters liquor and tobacco duty free shop at Singapore’s Changi Airport in June 2020, replacing former concession holder Hong Kong’s DFS Group after 30 years in Changi.

As South Korea’s leading travel retailer, Lotte Duty Free has set an aggressive sales target of USD790 million over 10 years for the new Sydney store.

In a statement, Lotte Duty Free said that it plans to become Australia’s largest duty-free operator by using its downtown Sydney store as a “stepping stone” to growth.

Lotte Duty Free entered the Oceania travel retail market after acquiring five duty free shops in Australia and New Zealand from JR/Duty Free in August 2018.

The group currently has airport retail units at Brisbane, Darwin, Christchurch and Wellington Airports, and a downtown store in Melbourne. The downtown Sydney store is the company’s first new store in Australia and Oceania.
