Georgia will be the Country of Honour in the Daejeon International Wine Expo 2023, scheduled to open from 3 to10 September in the central South Korean city of Daejeon.

Known for having 8,000 years of wine-making history as widely seen as the cradle of wine, Georgia will showcase its UNESCO-listed "Qvevri" winemaking method to wine lovers in South Korea.

Over 15 producers from Georgia will participate in the event, making it the largest delegation in the history of the Daejeon International Wine Expo.

Georgian ambassador to South Korea, Tarash Papaskua, said it is a "tremendous honour and privilege" to be selected as a Country of Honour at this year's Daejeon Wine Expo.

Georgian producers first took part in the Daejeon show in 2021 amidst the pandemic, this year the country will participate on the largest scale ever to showcase its distinctive wines.

"It is a special occasion for Georgia to be chosen the Country of Honour, as it helps our efforts to continue to inform and engage with the broader Korean public about Georgia's unique, 8,000 years of uninterrupted winemaking tradition using large clay vessels called Qvevri," Papaskua told Korean media.

The Daejeon Tourism Organisation, which organises the Expo, extended an invitation to the National Wine Agency of Georgia to be the Country of Honour at this year’s expo during ProWein exhibition in Germany in March.

"It is a recognition of Georgia's consistent efforts and steps to introduce and promote authentic Georgian wines, including the Qvevri wines on the Korean market, where we see immense growth potential for the future," said Papaskua.

Practised across Georgia's wine-making regions, the Qvevri method uses an egg-shaped clay vessel for making, fermenting, ageing and storing wine.

This traditional winemaking method was recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage in 2013.
