A local court in China has given a man a three-year ban from consuming liquor after he inflicted injuries to a relative under the influence of alcohol.

The court in Liucheng county in the southwestern Guangxi province gave the man a three-year suspended prison term. It also passed down an alcohol ban as condition of the suspension.

Court sentence like this is not common in China, this is the first ban of its kind in the city of Liuzhou, which has jurisdiction over Liucheng county.

Caught in a spat after drinking, the man caused major injuries to the head, chest and shoulder to a relative by hitting him with a wooden club.

The man pleaded guilty and has paid restitution to the victim who later forgave him for his behaviour.

Local judiciary authorities, the community and villagers will be made reponsible to make sure the man abide by the ban.

If he fails to comply, the suspension will be withdrawn and he will be sent to jail immediately.
