GUESTBOOKS SIGNED BY CELEBRITIES TRUMPED BURGUNDIES TO BECOME TOP LOT IN LE GAVROCHE AUCTION

More than 700 lots of fine wines and memorabilia from the the legendary London restaurant Le Gavroche went under the hammer in a two-part online auction hosted by Christie's from 10 to 24 April, having achieved a total grand total of £2.27 million (USD2.83m).

Part I, named The Restaurant, of the auction includes pictures, silverwares, porcelain and decorative objects from the restaurant which ceased operation on 13 January after 57 years.

While Part II, named The Wine Cellar, consists of bottles from Le Gavroche’s wine cellar featuring top Burgundy, Bordeaux and Rhône wines, alongside vintage Champagne and Port.

Lots from The Wine Cellar contributed the lion’s share of the sales realised, having achieved some £1.877m. While lots in Part I just achieved a little more than £392,000.

The top achieving item is Lot 92 from Part I- The Le Gavroche guestbooks, 1967 to present, signed by Charlie Chaplin, Madonna, Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger, Barbra Streisand and many others – sold for £37,800 with estimate of just £3,000 to 5,000.

The second achiever is Lot 91 from Part II- 7 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Richebourg Grand Cru 1993 - having achieved £35,000 with estimate at £14,000 to 22,000.

The 3rd is Lot 14 from Part I – The Le Gavroche electric sign – sold for £30,240 with estimate £1,000 to 1,500.

Rounding up the top five are two lots of Burgundies both having realised £30,000.

They are Lot 77 from Part II – 6 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, La Tâche Grand Cru 2000 – with estimate at £15,000 to 22,000; and Lot 93 – 9 bottle of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Richebourg Grand Cru 2000 – with estimate at 16,000 to 24,000.

Le Gavroche was co-founded in 1967 by the Roux brothers Albert and Michel, both had earned an OBE for their culinary contribution to the UK.

Renowned chefs Gordon Ramsay, Marcus Wareing, Pierre Koffmann and Marco Pierre White have all been trained in Le Gavroche. The restaurant had been run by Albert’s son and celebrity chef Michel Roux Jr since 1989.
