EX-HONG KONG CHIEF: CHINESE PEOPLE SHOULD DRINK CHINESE WINES

Former Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has called on the whole of China to only serve Chinese wines during national day celebrations on 1 October.

Writing on his Facebook page yesterday, Leung said the quality of Chinese wines has improved substantially and prices are very reasonable, it’s difficult to understand why Chinese wines will not be consumed during national day celebrations.

Leung is a serving vice-president of China’s political advisory board, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and is thus enjoying the status as a central leader, his call will command certain sway in Beijing.

The ex-Hong Kong leader also called on Hong Kong wine importers to ride the current panda hype by putting photos of the Hong Kong panda parents, who recently delivered a pair of panda twins to Hong Kong, on the labels of the wines they imported from China.

“Hong Kong wine importers should tap the coming panda economy and help sell more Chinese wines,” he suggested.

Leung has long been a supporter of the wine industry in China’s Ningxia region, which is the biggest wine producing area in China.

He has frequently paid visits to Ningxia since 2018 and has developed deep understanding on the vineyards and wineries in the area.

“The earnings of the farmers in Ningxia are very low at the moment. If we can help them sell their wines for ten yuans more per bottle, among them 5 yuans can go the pockets of the farmers.”

This is not the first time Leung called on Chinese people consuming Chinese wines, he made a similar call last year as Hong Kong celebrated the return of normality after the double whammy of the riots and the pandemic.
