A Hanyu Ichiro's Malt Full "Card" Series - one of the rarest and most coveted collections of Japanese Whisky - is still available at an estimate of €700,000 to €1.2 million after the online bidding for its sales has closed, Bonhams website has shown.

Offered at Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr Paris in an online sale from 12 to 29 November, the collection available was said to be from a prominent private collector with exceptional provenance, comprising 54 bottles representing each playing card in a full pack.

Only a few sets of the Malt Full "Card" Series exist in the world, Bonhams said this collection is unique as each bottle has been signed by Ichiro Akuto, the whisky-making legend of Japan who hand-picked the whiskies to be bottled.

Each 'card' was bottled from a single cask of premium whisky ranging in production years from 1985 to 2000 from the now closed distillery of Hanyu.

A collection of the Hanyu Ichiro's Malt Full "Card" Series was sold in 2020 in a Bonhams Hong Kong auction for a combined total of HKD HKD11,890,600 (€1.45m/USD1.5m), which is also the highest ever sold price for the series.

In 2015, Bonhams was the first auction house to sell the Full "Card" series, which set the world record at the time for the most valuable Japanese whisky collection at HKD3,797,500. The same series then went on to break two more records at Bonhams in 2019 for HKD7,192,000 before achieving its highest sold price of HKD11,890,600 in 2020.

Founded by Isouji Akuto, a 19th generation descendant of a long line of sake brewers to produce Scotch-style malt whisky, the Hanyu distillery ceased production in 2000.

Ichiro Akuto, grandson of Isouji and a Japanese whisky legend, stepped in to secure most of the some 400 casks of whisky left from the distillery.

Ichiro personally selected the casks to be bottled for each 'card' released between 2005 and 2014, ensuring that the Hanyu legend lives on.
