Hong Kong and Macau are the most expensive cities to dine in Michelin-starred restaurants, trailing after only Copenhagen which has the most expensive Michelin dining in the world, according to research by Australian food magazine Chef’s Pencil.
Chef’s Pencil looked at the most premium tasting menus at over 3,300 Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, and found that Denmark’s capital city Copenhagen has the highest price on average at USD443 (DKK3011) per person.
The second most expensive is Macau, the world’s gambling capital, where it costs an average of USD283 (MOP2,280) per person.
Hong Kong, Asia’s financial hub, is in third spot. A premium Michelin tasting menu in Hong Kong costs about USD 266 (HKD2,080) per person.
The top three are followed by San Francisco, New York and Dubai on the most pricey chart.
Copenhagen is home to 14 Michelin-starred restaurants, with eight of them holding two or three stars. Over the past couple of decades it has transformed itself into a culinary mecca, home to the legendary Noma and other amazing establishments such as Geranium and The Alchemist.
Macau has one of the highest densities of Michelin-starred restaurants per mile in the world and it is the second most expensive city in the world. It is home to 16 Michelin-starred restaurants, with eight of them holding two or three stars.
Hong Kong has always been a top culinary destination, and it has the third largest number of three stars Michelin restaurants in the world (next to Paris and Tokyo).
The city is also famous for its stratospheric real estate prices and its fine-dining scene is equally expensive.
Chef Pencil’s analysis found that Chengdu in China and Vancouver in Canada have the least expensive Michelin tasting menus on offer.
It costs only USD88 (RMB642) to enjoy a Michelin experience in Chengdu and USD113 (CAD155) in Vancouver.
