A single bottle of Château Latour 1865 from cellar of Artémis Domaines was sold for HKD812,500 (USD104,570) at a Christie’s Hong Kong auction on 30 October, almost four times its pre-sale high estimate of HKD220,000.

The 159-year-old Latour looks new in photo, Christie’s said it was reconditioned in 1990, with a new label and capsule.

It was joint-top lot at the “Direct from the Cellars: Artémis Domaines” auction hosted by Christie’s Hong Kong, alongside a five-litre jeroboam of Château Latour 1961, also sold for HKD812,500 with high estimate at HKD650,000.

Bottles of Bouchard Père & Fils Burgundy wines dating back to the 1860s were also featured in the auction.

A bottle of Bouchard Père & Fils’ Chambertin 1865 was sold for HKD625,000 (high estimate HKD300,000), and a bottle of the group’s Montrachet 1864 fetched HKD437,500 (high estimate HKD150,000).

Christie’s said all 370 lots directly from Artémis Domaines were sold with total sales achieving HKD26 million.

Artémis acquired Bouchard Père & Fils in 2022, after taking a controlling stake in a merger deal with the Henriot family’s wine business.

Frédéric Engerer, CEO of Artémis Domaines, said: “This sale is further proof that old and rare wines, especially those from the great vintages of the nineteenth century, form a unique heritage.”

“Made from pre-phylloxera vines, these wines give rise to exceptional tasting experiences, though the number of bottles looked after with meticulous care in our cellars is slowly dwindling.”

Other highlights included Bordeaux and Burgundy wines from the well regarded 1945 vintage.

Three bottles of Bouchard Père & Fils, Musigny Grand Cru 1945 were sold for HKD475,000, more than double the pre-sale high estimate of HKD190,000.

Also featured in the auction were 1996 Jacquesson Avize Grand Cru in magnum, the rarely seen 1990 Chateau Grillet, Clos de Tart from the historic 1990, 1985 and 1976 vintages and large formats of Domaine d'Eugénie’s Grand Cru.

Christie’s said one in four new buyers in the auction were millennials, highlighting interest from a younger generation of bidders.
