According to the latest data from the Chilean Wine Association, total wine exports to China is expected to exceed 130 million litres by volume and USD1.35 billion by value in the 2024-25 wine export season.

These figures represent a remarkable increase from previous years and demonstrate the growing popularity of Chilean wines among Chinese consumers.

This growth not only reflects the strong demand for Chilean wines in the Chinese market but also indicates the successful strategies employed by Chilean wine producers to expand in the country.

One of the key factors contributing to this success is the long-standing free trade agreement between Chile and China.

Since its implementation in 2006 and subsequent updates, the agreement has eliminated import tariffs on Chilean wines, making them more price competitive in the Chinese market.

This has allowed Chilean wineries to offer a wide range of products at various price points, appealing to a broad spectrum of Chinese consumers, from casual drinkers to wine connoisseurs.

Moreover, Chilean winemakers have been actively focusing on product innovation and quality improvement.

They have introduced new wine varieties and blends tailored to Chinese taste preferences. For example, many wineries have emphasized the production of red wines, especially those made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere grapes, which are highly favoured by Chinese consumers.

These wines are known for their rich flavours, smooth tannins, and relatively affordable prices compared to some European counterparts.

In addition, Chilean wine producers have also ramped up their marketing and promotional efforts in China. They have participated in numerous wine exhibitions, trade fairs, and tasting events across the country, such as the annual China International Import Expo.

These activities have provided opportunities for Chinese consumers to sample Chilean wines first hand and learn about the unique terroir and winemaking traditions of Chile.

Another significant aspect is the digital marketing strategies adopted by Chilean wine companies. With the increasing prevalence of e - commerce and social media in China, they have utilized online platforms to reach a wider audience, engage with consumers directly, and build brand awareness.

Online wine sales in China have been growing steadily, and Chilean wines have managed to capture a significant share of this booming market.
