The slump in the auction price for rare Japanese whiskies continued last month as prices for fine Scotch whiskies started to stabilise, the price index compiled by Whiskystats shows.
According to Whiskystats, auction price for Japanese whiskies dropped 1.6 percent in January this year compared to the month before. The price has plummeted by 54.51 percent compared to the peak in 2022, and the decline over the past year has reached 23.47 percent.
The index showed that auction price for all leading Japanese whisky brands including Yamazaki, Hibiki, Hakushu, Chichibu, Hanyu and Karuizawa have declined.
The price for Yamazaki has dropped 15.92 percent in a year, Hibiki by 28.1 percent, Hakushu by 17.83 percent, Chichibu by 29.36 percent, Hanyu by 25.27 percent, and Karuizawa has the largest annual decline, reaching 39.68 percent.
The peak to trough price of the legendary Yamazaki 55YO illustrates how severe is the correction in the price of rare Japanese whisky.
The price for a bottle of Yamazaki 55YO has dropped from HKD6.2 million (USD797,000) in 2020 to just HKD2.5m in 2024, a decline of almost 60 percent.

In January 2025, about 27,000 bottles of whiskies were traded in global auctions, the trading volume was stable compared to previous month.
