Ten British alcoholic drinks including Welsh single malt, West country ciders and Sussex wines have gained geographical indication status from Japan.
The protected status provides legal safeguards for exports of these alcoholic drinks to Japan’s market, home to 124 million consumers in the world’s fourth-largest economy.
A trading breakthrough between Japan and the UK just before Christmas means that some of Britain's well regarded food and drinks could soon appear much more frequently on Japan's menus.
A total of 39 iconic products have won special protected status so British businesses can export to Japan with confidence that their products will not be imitated.
Majority of the 39 products are food items including Scottish wild salmon, Whitstable oyster and Buxton blue cheese.
Among them 10 are alcoholic drinks, they are Darnibole (a Cornwall white wine from Bacchus grapes), Gloucestershire cider, Gloucestershire perry, Rutland bitter, Sussex wine, traditional Welsh cider, traditional Welsh perry, Worcestershire cider, Worcestershire perry and Welsh whisky.
Welsh whisky producer Penderyn Distillery welcomed the news and is preparing to further expand their presence in Japan.
“Japan is an important market for world-class single malt whisky, making it a key target market for Penderyn single malt welsh whisky. We have a great partner (Whisk-E) and together we plan to build awareness and reputation for our unique brand from Wales,” said Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn Distillery.
"Iconic UK products will now benefit from protected status in Japan. From Sussex to Armagh, we are securing protections for unique British food and drink products, ensuring Japanese consumers can rest assured that they are receiving authentic, high-quality British produce,” said UK trade minister Douglas Alexander.
"This early Christmas present to British producers will give them confidence when exporting to Japan, helping them sell more, grow their business and ultimately drive economic growth," he added.
