The Macallan has launched the latest expression in its Distil Your World series, drawing inspiration from the vibrant metropolis of Hong Kong for this fourth installment.
The limited edition release, accompanied by a new episode titled “Reimagining Spaces,” celebrates Hong Kong’s unique character as a city continually reinventing itself while balancing tradition and innovation.
For this expression, Macallan’s lead whisky maker Euan Kennedy collaborated with the internationally renowned Roca brothers of El Celler de Can Roca, the twice-named World’s Best Restaurant.
Together, they “embarked on a sensorial journey to distil the essence of Hong Kong.”
“This is a deeply personal whisky, inspired by my time with Joan Roca exploring Hong Kong,” Kennedy said.
“It is big and bold. I wanted to develop the idea of structure in this whisky, reflective of the building environment rising from the sea to the green peaks behind. To create contrast within this whisky, in the same way Hong Kong is a city of contrast.
A whisky with many layers, to be returned to again and again to find more stories to tell, its incredible complexity transporting you on a journey of flavour and memory.”
The whisky is being released alongside the latest Distil Your World film, which follows Euan Kennedy and Joan Roca through Hong Kong as they brainstorm ideas for both the whisky and the accompanying menu.
The naturally dark single malt showcases bold flavours derived from selected sherry-seasoned European Oak hogsheads. These casks impart distinctive notes of ginger and cinnamon, echoing the local spices discovered in Hong Kong’s vibrant markets.
On the nose, the whisky presents rich, resinous sweetness with ginger and spices, balanced by fragrant honey, antique oak, and tropical fruit characteristics reminiscent of Hong Kong-style egg tarts.
The palate delivers a mouthcoating viscosity paired with bright tropical sweetness, structured ginger, and rounded spices, giving way to aged oak, grapefruit, and umami depth. The finish highlights vibrant antique oak.
Bottled at 46.8 percent ABV, the expression carries a price tag of USD4,750. Complementing the whisky, the Roca brothers have created a menu that reflects Hong Kong’s cultural tapestry and dynamic landscape.
“Distil Your World brought us to Hong Kong, and we have distilled the city with extraordinary results,” said Joan Roca.
“The creative process is where we have fun. That’s where the chaos is, where we are open to anything, where anything is possible and, no matter how crazy it may seem, it may be useful. Our culinary proposal is inspired by the deep-rooted traditions and different cultures of Hong Kong, while at the same time represents the modernity of the city.”
The modern, cosmopolitan menu features Yum cha aperitifs, a special Casa Cacao blend tea, Rose Ha gau, scallop and sea urchin Cheung fun, and truffle cha siu bao. Main courses include sweet and sour vegetables inspired by the Temple Night Market and prawn roe mousse with steamed abalone, complemented by a unique duck and milk tea mooncake.
