Leaders of the Chinese baijiu industry have called on the central government to help with their internationalisation effort during the annual National People’s Congress (NPC) and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) sessions held from 4 to 11 March.
Bosses of baijiu distilleries including Guijing Gongjiu, Luzhou Laojiao and Shede Spirits, who attended the two sessions as members, have presented initiatives aiming at putting Chinese baijiu on the global spirits map.
These initiatives include getting the central government to help push for Chinese baijiu to be inscribed as a world cultural heritage.
To achieve that end, the leaders emphasised the need to create a baijiu standard system that aligns with international norms, covering aspects like distillation and ageing requirements, labelling rules as well as quality inspection protocols.
They also called for more exchanges with the international spirits industry to promote Chinese baijiu in the global stage.
The leaders also called on the central government to help the industry to secure tariff reductions during trade negotiations. They also hope Beijing can give them tax rebates and subsidies when exporting baijiu.
They also advocated cross-departmental cooperation among commerce, customs, and quality inspection agencies to build a robust support platform for baijiu exporters.
