Chinese customs data showed that the country registered a sharp rise in wine imports in 2024, driven by the resurgence of Australian wines.

Total wine import value increased 39.6 percent reaching RMB11.47 billion (USD1.58b) while volume surged 13.7 percent to 283.1 million litres in 2024.

Australian wine regained its dominance after China lifted the 200 percent tariffs imposed in 2020. Australian shipments jumped from 1.6m litres to 78.6m and from RMB24.7m to RMB4.24b.

The return of Australian wines knocked French wines to the second place in terms of import value, France exported RMB3.55b worth of wines to China in the year.

Together Australia and France accounted for 68 percent of China's imported wine market by value.

In volume terms, Chile remained the top supplier at 94m litres, though it registered a 15 percent decline.

Bottled wines accounted for the bulk of wine purchases in China in 2024, reaching RMB10.33b by value and 165.6m litres by volume, accounting for 90 percent of total import value and 58.5 percent of total volume.

Bulk wine imports saw some gains, while sparkling wine imports decreased in value but rose in volume. In total China sourced wines from 56 countries and regions in 2024.
