Japan will start unifying tax rates between Sake and wine from tomorrow, a bottle of 750ml wine will be taxed 7.5 yen more while a bottle of 720ml Sake will be taxed 7.2 yen less.
The Japanese government is trying to unify the tax rates between wine and Sake. At the moment, the tax rate for Sake is 120 yen per litre, while that for wine is 80 yen per litre.
The government is planning to eliminate this difference in two stages. The first stage will start from tomorrow, the tax rate for Sake will be reduced to 110 yen per litre, while that for wine will be increased to 90 yen litre.
The second stage is expected to kick in from October 2023, when tax rate for both Sake and wine will be 100 yen per litre.
The Japanese government is also trying to unify tax rates for the different categories of beers on the market.
The existing tax rate for normal beer is 220 yen per litre, for low-malt beer is 134.25 yen litre and for beer-like beverages is 80 yen per litre.
From tomorrow, tax rate for beer-like beverages will be increased to 108 yen per litre, while tax rate for regular beer will be lowered to 200 yen per litre.
The Japanese government is planning to unify the tax rates for all three beer categories in three stages and a unified tax rate of 155 yen per litre is expected by October 2026.
